4 Quick Ways To Grow Your Site’s Authority

The Greater Your Site’s Authority, The Easier It  Is To Rank Higher For Keywords, Thus More Likely To Be Found By Your Target Audience

Before I jump into “Foundational” backlinks, I want to show you how to boost your site’s authority. Remember, the purpose of link acquisition to build the authority of your site.

1. Fix Broken External Links

Remember, every external link you place on your site leaks authority That’s why it’s important to audit your site (here’s an SEO audit checklist) to find broken external links. This applies to both external links in your content and in the comment section.

To find broken links use one or all the following:

Screaming Frog SEO Spider
Siteliner
Google Search Console
Ahrefs

2. Reclaim Lost Link Juice (404 Link Reclamation).

404 link reclamation is at the top of the list because it is the easiest. To find all 404 errors on your site use Google Search Console or Screaming Frog. Run the pages through a bulk check on Ahrefs or Majestic if you find 404 errors. I recommend doing both just in case you miss some links. You must 301 redirect them to a relevant page on the site or to your homepage when you find pages with link equity.

3. Find and Fix Redirect Chains.

Sometimes the most obvious solutions are right in front of your face. Once fixed, redirect chains are another simple problem that can boost your site’s authority.

4. Change 302s to 301s.

302s redirects block authority flow and could be stealing authority from your site. Identify all 302 redirects on and off your site, and change them to 301s. Once again, use Screaming Frog to find.
302s.

You now know how to improve your site’s authority without building new backlinks. Now it’s time to learn how to build foundational backlinks.

How to Build “Foundational” Backlinks.

Foundational” backlinks improve your site’s TrustRank.

The more “trustworthy” your site is, the better you will perform in the search engines.

The Foundational backlinks will create a layer of trust around your site. That’s because you will be using nothing but unoptimized, branded backlinks on authority sites. This system works extremely well.

Important note:  You should only use naked link or branded anchors for foundational backlinks.

Social Media.

The first thing you need to do is secure all your social media properties. At the very minimum, your business should have:.

Facebook.
Twitter.
Google + (Personal & Business).
LinkedIn (Personal & Business).
Pinterest.
Instagram.
You don’t have to actively market on these platforms, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt.

For example, for some clients we decided that Facebook was our best social media platform based on referral traffic and engagement. That’s why we are “all-in” on Facebook and not as active on the other platforms. Choose what platforms work best for your business. At the minimum, populate these accounts and share some content, so that you at least have a base.

Business Listings/Citations.

Google values business listings so much that it is apart of the local search algorithm. This should be more than enough for you to use them for ANY SEO campaign. The cool part about listings is that about 50% of them give you a DoFollow, unoptimized link.

Business citations are a perfect way to build a foundation of trust around your site. Remember, not all backlinks hitting your site need to be 100% relevant. I’m referring to business listings and social media profiles.

Google trusts these platforms and is well aware that all types of businesses will be using them. In a sense, they get a pass for not being relevant. Make sure you check out our citation building service if you don’t want to waste your time building citations.

Niche-Targeted Directories.

While most directories are pretty much worthless, there are some diamonds in the rough. Niche-targeted directories offer both a relevant and DoFollow link. As you know, backlinks with both of these characteristics are hard to come by.

Use these search strings in Google to find niche directories:.

NICHE + Directory (Example: “fitness + directory”).
NICHE directories.
NICHE + “submit site”.
Geo-Targeted Directories.

Geo-targeted directories are a must-have link source for local businesses.

Here are some search strings you can use to find geo-targeted directories:.
city + directory.
directory + city.
submit my site + city.
niche + city + directory.
city + directories.

Niche Relevant Blog Comments.

I’m always amazed why so many SEOs skip out on niche relevant blog comments. Too many SEOs neglect them because of the dreaded “NoFollow” tag. I highly recommend you don’t neglect them.

My agency uses niche relevant blog comments to:

A) create a layer of relevancy around our client’s site.

B) improve to the ratio of Do Follow and No Follow backlinks.

C) diversify our anchors in a meaningful way.

D) sometimes get small amounts.

Learn Benefits of Backlinks Beyond SEO Top Ranking

Backlinks Can Offer More Advantages Than Just Optimization

Google’s search algorithm places such great emphasis on the accumulation of backlinks that link builders can forget the value of a link beyond search. Yes, quality backlinks can carry enormous weight and help bring your site to the top of a competitive search engine results page (SERP).

That’s not the only purpose of a link, however.

Even though the majority of clients at my company are interested primarily in search traffic, link building can certainly be used for other purposes. Here are just a few:

Referral Traffic
Branding
Building Authority
Building Relationships
Promotion

Understandably there’s some hesitation when it comes to pursuing links in today’s SEO environment. Even though links are unquestionably an important ranking technique, Google likes to engage in a large-scale FUD offensive every-so-often. They do this in an effort to ward out spammers/black hat SEOs.

Seek links you would want even if Google did not reward them. Not only will it actually lead to links that Google is likely to value, it will provide other marketing benefits as well.

Referral Traffic:
According to Conductor, search engines direct about 47% of online traffic. Of all the sources, search engines represent a plurality of directed traffic. But that means the majority of traffic is independent of search engine rankings. According to the same Conductor study, non-social referral visits account for 15% of the internet’s traffic. Even using Conductor’s sample size of 310 million hits, that’s 4.7 million referral clicks.

Hence, links don’t only lead to search engine traffic. A well-placed link on an authority site can direct an abundance of referral traffic.

Never underestimate the value of a good click. You should always prioritize the chase for search traffic over referral traffic. Just think of referral traffic as the pretty bow on the Christmas present.

Branding:
The more you see and recognize something, the more like;y you are to like it. Think of politicians (even a TV star of a popular TV series- (ever heard of The Apprentice?) Those that the public recognize have an easier time of viewer recognition and familiarity breeds authority and often likability. The University of Arkansas recently conducted an experiment in which they had subjects listen to two different mixes of the same piece of music, one in it’s original form, the other edited so that a segment of it was looped. The subjects reported to liking the latter version far more. The researchers attributed this to the mere exposure effect, a phenomenon in which people grow to like things and concepts simply out of familiarity.

Links are visible to the public, or they should be anyway. And because links are viewable to the users and not just search engines, link building can be used for branding.

Branding is marketing 101. Consumers/readers trust established brands, even if those brands have done things that would ordinarily lead to a negative reputation.

Right now in the world of SEO, it’s more important than ever to be cognizant of anchor text diversity. Google is not fond of sites that use the same keyword-rich anchor text over and over.

So along with keyword and white noise anchors, branded anchors should absolutely be part of your link profile.

Being “forced” to use your brand name as an anchor is a way of simply getting your name out there. Even if a user doesn’t click the first time seeing your name, the more that user sees your name, the more that user is going to be compelled to click. And once they click, they are led to the biggest branding opportunity you have: your site.

There’s no better representation of your brand than your website, and link building is a valuable way to get people to look at your brand in all of its glory.

Authority
So your name is out there now. As I said before, established brand names can still thrive even when having a negative reputation. Denny’s had a great 2013. Now take a look at what their customers think of them. Sometimes, even having a bad reputation is better than having no reputation (and therefore no recognition) at all.

Having said that, wouldn’t it be better if your brand had a reputation as an authority and leader within your niche?

I’m talking about authority in the expert form., not in the numerical form like domain authority; most consumers don’t know what domain authority is. Being associated as a “know-it-all” isn’t that bad…Geeks are pretty cool now. Look at the popularity of TV shows like The Big Bang Theory, Doctor Who, Heroes, and 24.

Getting links on authority sites is a great way to have some authority rub off on you. Not only is the link viewed as a vote of confidence by search engines, more importantly, it’s viewed as a vote of confidence by users.

Relationship Building
If you’re building links without building relationships, you’re doing it wrong. I can’t emphasize enough how much easier link building is when you have relationships within your niche to rely upon.
